On the 8th of December 1914 the last act of the dramatic voyage of Admiral Graf von Spee came to an end off the Falkland Islands. Ordering his lighter ships to turn south, von Spee turned the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau to face the British battlecruisers Invincible and lnflexable and in the ensuing battle the German ships were both destroyed with a tremendous loss of life. subsequently the rest of von Spee’s ships were also sunk thus ending the German Asiatic squadron forever.
