A dedicated anti-submarine destroyer, she was large enough (10,000 tons) to pass as a cruiser and as such her design was criticised for being somewhat under armed, with just two small guns and Asroc rocket depth charges but John Young’s design was cleverer than it looked, she had the space and capacity to mount many more weapons when they became available and during her life she was armed with Tomahawk and Harpoon anti ship missiles and Sea Sparrow anti-aircraft. Although she was never to see action, John Young rescued 454 Vietnamese boat people and captured the oddly named drug running vessel ‘Forever My Friend’ and for her life saving work she received the Humanitarian Service Medal.
